first
We read the book thoroughly (or, better still, the galleys) to ferret out as many promotional angles as possible. Then we interview the author to prepare a press biography and to ask for his or her promotional recommendations. We also write a concise book summary to enable interviewers who haven't read the book to ask the author intelligent questions about it.
Second
We write and distribute a news release announcing the book's publication to cultural affairs editors at major daily newspapers, wire services, NPR shows that feature books and authors, subject-related periodicals, selected college newspapers, book blogs and relevant professional associations.
Third
We publicize locally via print, TV, radio and Internet all book signings the author or publisher sets up. (Storm Coast generally doesn't organize book tours since sales at book signings rarely cover the author's travel and lodging expenses. We can publicize such tours, however.)
Fourth
We pitch the author for personal or phone interviews to NPR (various shows), satellite radio (various shows), cable TV (various shows) and major-market radio programs. (Knowing the high cost of providing review copies, we use them sparingly, sending them only to outlets that either promise a review or interview or that show serious interest in spotlighting the book.)
fifth
We alert the publisher and author to credible contests into which the book might be entered for awards (and the attendant publicity).
Sixth
We facilitate the author's appearance at book festivals and participation on conference panels relevant to the book's subject matter.
Seventh
We build up and publicize the author as an expert or authority in his or her field as a way of drawing additional attention to the book.
Eighth
We provide the publisher a monthly report of our activities on behalf of the book.
In all our communications with media, we refer to or link to the publisher's website.
Timeline
While Storm Coast Book Promotions can do most of the groundwork within the first monthsuch as preparing media materials and servicing the book-release announcement—it will take more time to do the follow-through that is essential to keep the book selling.
We recommend at least a three-month agreement, the cost of which the publisher may wish to share with the author. Our aim, of course, is to help the press sell far more than enough books to cover our fee.
